After entering a contest on Marta Banat’s blog, A Husky Life, I was surprised and delighted to be chosen as one of the winners. The prize was a Vimtag video surveillance camera! Winning this camera has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for taking care of my pet rats.
Henderson and Twyla have a four-story cage that’s bigger than a refrigerator and it’s located on the bottom floor of our house. I work as much as possible in their room but I can’t be there all the time. Thanks to the camera, I can now check on them while I’m upstairs and see when they’re awake and ready for some play time.

Do you use it at night? If so, how much light do you need to leave on for the camera to have good quality video? Thank you.

This camera works very well with no light since it has “night vision”. Here are a couple of still shots showing what it looks like when there are no lights on in a room at night.
It’s not high quality but, considering there’s no light source, you can definitely see (and hear) your pet rats’ activities. It’s pretty amazing considering there’s no source of light in the room.

It’s definitely possible to be able to tell how your rats are doing using the Vimtag camera at night with no additional lights.

I agree, the QUALITY of the images produced by the Vimtag camera are phenomenal.
This is SO COOL. I have always wanted one of these cameras so I could check in on everyone while I’m at work. I suspect most of our crew sleeps while I’m at work, but maybe I’m wrong.
It IS really neat to be able to see what they’re doing when I’m not there. I get to see behavior I otherwise wouldn’t have gotten to see. The best part, though, is I can easily tell when they’re ready to play and can then play with them on their schedule. I highly recommend this particular camera. I’ve tried one other brand which doesn’t have all the features and the quality that the Vimtag camera does.
