Just a few of the many reasons why rats are the best pets….
Pet Rats Are Great Kissers
Pet Rats Teach You About Nutrition
Before I had rats I hadn’t even heard of bok choy and kale. Now I eat these nutrient-rich veggies all the time.
Pet Rats Will Meditate With You
Pet rats easily adjust to your sleeping schedule—unlike hamsters who are strictly nocturnal and will run on their wheels all night long.

Always learning something new on this site. Here’s a question though – do rats bite? I’ve always wanted to know if they would. #justasking

Hi Cathy!
The only reason a rat would bite is if it was afraid and had been mistreated by humans in the past. They’re very similar to dogs in this respect. I once helped rescue several rats who were left in a dumpster….this was about 20 years ago and I don’t think I’ve been bitten again since. Rats could also bite if they weren’t socialized…especially if you have food on your hands or on your fingers. Once rats are used to being handled and being around humans, though, they definitely would not bite. (Again, similar to dogs.)
Hamsters, on the other hand (literally!), are almost always biters. I don’t know why so many people think hamsters are good pets for kids.
My rats would never bite anyone….they’re so cuddly and snuggly, especially my little boy rat, Henderson.
I’m glad you asked because I bet there are a lot of people who are afraid of rats because they think they’ll get bitten!

I never knew that about the biting. I saw you commented and read and I wanted to express my thanks, because like you said, people are often misunderstood and educating people is key.
So true, Lindsay, about the importance of educating people! Most of us have a fear of the unknown. If pet rats are not a familiar part of one’s life, it’s very easy to imagine all sorts of bad things about them.
Love their ears and cute little hands and how they hold things. <3 precious!
Thank you so much, Lindsay! I agree, they’re pretty adorable!

Thank you for sharing! I had no idea that rats would actually play. This was a very enlightening read!
Hi Kathryn,
I’m happy to hear you found this post enlightening. Not only do pet rats play like cats, but they groom themselves just like cats, too.
Thanks for your comment!
